The employer needs to know who is acting for the estate so it can settle final pay.
Who usually does this
A close family member or the executor.
What they will ask for
- The death certificate
- Details of the executor or administrator, and evidence of their appointment
- Bank account details for the estate
- Your contact details
How to tell them
Contact the person’s manager, human resources or payroll area by phone or email. Ask who to deal with about final pay, and tell them who is acting for the estate.
For a former employer, the same contact covers anything still held through them, such as a pension or shares.
What happens next
The employer settles any final pay with the estate and confirms in writing what was paid and how it was treated.
The official page
Things change, so check their own page before you start: ATO: payments after an employee has died (written for employers, and it is the process they follow).
This is one of many. The tracker holds all of them.
The notification tracker lists every organisation most families have to tell, with a place to mark each one off and keep the reference number they give you. The checklist for the weeks after a death is free, with no account needed.
Checked against the official sources on 13 September 2026. General information, not advice. 18December is not affiliated with any organisation named on this page.
